About Fishackathon

First organized by the US Secretary’s Office of Global Partnerships in 2014, Fishackathon inspires the creation of digital solutions to address sustainable fisheries challenges.

Overfishing and other serious problems harm marine environments and can devastate already-struggling, small-scale fishing marketplaces and communities, many of them in developing countries. Protections exist, but actual enforcement faces major obstacles.

To combat this, Fishackathon brings together thousands of concerned designers, developers, and subject matter experts for a weekend to build practical tech solutions to endemic problems defined by the world’s most respected fisheries experts.

Save our waters, save our world!

ABOUT FISHACKATHON

At Fishackathon we bring together over 40 cities worldwide to solve issues of overfishing internationally in one single weekend. Overfishing harms the marine environment and reduces the already meager income of small scale fishermen, many of which reside in developing countries.

Fishackathon brings together designers, coders and subject matter experts to find innovative ways of collecting and analyzing data, as well as to find solutions to unsustainable fishing practices.

HOW IT WORKS

In the coming weeks, Fishackathon will announce the challenge sets we’ve defined with our partners alongside the launch of participant registration.

Expert mentors will help teams hone their ideas into projects that will solve actual (rather than imagined!) problems.

Teams will gather in each city on February 10-11, 2018 to execute on the design and development of these projects — then demo for panels of distinguished judges. Local prizes will be awarded, and top teams will move on to the regional and global finals.

As part of our Grand Prize, Fishackathon partners are strongly encouraged to work with global winners to further product development and get to market.
